ABOUT FHCW

Worcester's medical home, by design and intent.

Family Health Center of Worcester (FHCW) has been on Queen Street since 1970. Designated a Federally Qualified Health Center in 1972 and Joint Commission accredited, FHCW is the medical home for tens of thousands of patients across primary care, perinatal care, behavioral health, dentistry, walk-in urgent and same-day care, a Ryan White HIV program, refugee and immigrant health services, and seven school-based health centers in Worcester Public Schools.

The patient population reflects the city. Families impacted by poverty and structural inequities, immigrants and asylum seekers, and Worcester's culturally diverse neighborhoods. Patients speak more than sixty languages; the care team is fluent in over thirty. Hours run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with Saturday clinic — extended access by design, because access is the point.

WHY PATIENT ACCESS IS THE WORK

A schedule that has to hold together.

Every FQHC carries an operating burden the rest of healthcare doesn't. UDS reporting deadlines arrive every February. Medicaid redetermination disrupts the panel. Sliding-fee economics mean an empty chair isn't a missed billing line — it's a missed countable visit and a step away from grant performance. Patients reach the health center about appointments through every channel they have: phone, walk-in, MyChart, family member.

In a system this rich and this constrained, patient access is the visible surface of everything else. If the schedule doesn't reflect who's actually coming, none of the rest holds together.

THE DEPLOYMENT

Patient access, integrated into the channel patients already use.

FHCW runs QLess Health for patient access across primary care and the walk-in center: self-scheduling, virtual waiting, and continuity-aware recall. Integration with FHCW's Epic environment means QLess Health lives inside the MyChart channel patients already use — same patient-facing experience as the rest of the FHCW digital footprint, same workflow for the front desk.

The deployment supports the full breadth of the care model, from family medicine and perinatal visits through the walk-in center.

IN PRACTICE

Continuity, capacity, and the patient who didn't show up.

Patients hold their place from anywhere. The schedule reflects panel relationships rather than slotting visits wherever space exists. Continuity-aware recall surfaces patients who haven't been seen — a structural lever in a population where Medicaid redetermination, language barriers, and life circumstances regularly pull people away from care.
